  7.     Norman Mailer reportedly considers being photographed the
  8. equivalent of undergoing root-canal work. That hasn't stopped
  9. the author from starring in his own bizarre improvisational
  10. films. Last week Mailer lectured on his celluloid life at a New
  11. York City retrospective of his movies. Among them: Maidstone,
  12. the film he made in 1968 that ends with Mailer's family
  13. shrieking "Daddy! Daddy!" off-camera as the author-director
  14. tries to bite an ear off actor Rip Torn, who had attacked him
  15. with a hammer. The battle ceases with an exchange of insults,
  16. with Mailer muttering "He's hurt worse than me." How things
  17. have changed. "In Rip's view, everything made perfect sense,"
  18. says a now grateful Mailer. "He may have saved the film."
  19. Sometimes it takes a hammer to drive home a point.
